Bioluminescent Bay

Updated: Jul 18, 2023

Laguna Grande in Fajardo, Puerto Rico is one of three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico. It is the most visited bio bay in Puerto Rico due to its proximity to San Juan(35 miles). It's also the only one of the three that's not technically a bay; the long and narrow canal that leads to the dazzling “glow-in-the-dark” water makes this unique waterbody a lagoon!

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon in which certain organisms produce light. In the case of Laguna Grande, the organisms responsible for the bioluminescence are dinoflagellates, tiny marine plankton. When these plankton are disturbed, they emit a blue-green light. This light is produced as a defense mechanism to ward off predators.

The best time to visit Laguna Grande is during the new moon, when there is less light pollution. The bioluminescence is also more visible on calm nights.

There are a number of tour operators that offer kayaking tours of Laguna Grande in Fajardo. These tours typically last about two hours and include transportation to and from the lagoon. Kayakers are given paddles that have been dipped in a solution that attracts the dinoflagellates. When the paddles are dipped in the water, they create a trail of glowing light.

Kayaking through Laguna Grande is a truly magical experience. The glowing water is like nothing you've ever seen before. It's an experience that you'll never forget.

Here are some tips for visiting Laguna Grande:

  • Book your tour in advance, especially during peak season.

  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you don't mind getting wet.

  • Bring a camera to capture the amazing sights.

  • Be respectful of the environment and do not disturb the dinoflagellates.

Laguna Grande is a truly special place. It's an experience that you'll never forget.
